3 Principles For Overcoming Fitness Obstacles:

If you’re as I am, the pursuit to be in shape and manage weight feels overwhelming. And, just as if the mission for being fit isn’t tough enough, there’s often other obstacles to get over: medical concerns, personal time management, mustering up courage or energy. Even if you’ve been exercising for some time, there’s always new barriers being broken. So, the best way to put all in this into perspective?

According to Tom Turner, executive liaison for your Spina Bifida Association that’s exactly it: Perspective. And also, in accordance with him, there’s no mountain too much to climb. Tom knows. Paralyzed from the waist down since birth he’s now 35 and trains three or more times every week. In fact, he tells me, he just couldn’t go along without exercise.

So during my quest with the last word on overcoming barriers in fitness, Tom sat down with me at night and together we developed 3 principles that will help break-down fears and intimidations when striving to achieve fitness goals. (After all, if they can exercise often, shouldn’t that be encouragement enough for any individual to give it a  shot?).

Principle #1 Move Into The Fear:

“Train your mind to trust no mountain is too much or any goal is way too difficult to attain,” Tom tells me. Basically, it’s about meeting your fears and facing them head-on. In this principle, try and recognize your fears, acknowledge them and move through them. Ask yourself what exactly is it that makes you uncomfortable? Have you let yourself leave shape and are also afraid you’ll never reunite? Do you have a personal injury that’s caused you to become afraid of the body? If you are able to visualize creatively, you’ll be able to put your fears under control. See your self as you’d like being. Remember: your whole body loves you and also has the possibility to heal itself to perfection. Your only job is usually to trust it and listen.

Principle #2 Trust Your Intuition:

It is essential when overcoming obstacles and understanding how to break through barriers that you simply begin to tune in to the still small voice of the body. In most cases, everybody wants the comfort of having someone telling us that which you can and can’t do. However, our highest truth lies within us. This is not to mention that the good opinion of others matters not, but ultimately your decision making originates from within.

When facing quite a job or an obstacle turn to how you feel. What are your instincts indicating? Often it is actually your instinct that can move you in a new mindset and raise your consciousness. “I wasn’t going to let the wheelchair stand during my way,” Tom tells me. In fact, he tells he had to only change his perspective regarding it. He says he first was required to learn about what his restrictions were then, make a boundary for himself. “We all have boundaries,” he tells me. “Regardless when someone can walk or otherwise, obstacles are as unique as people themselves. Therefore, it’s first far better to know your boundaries.”

Next, Tom tells me he aims to satisfy those boundaries.  “I first reach up to I can in what I am able to do. Whether it be more sets, reps or greater endurance, I allow myself all the time as essential to accomplishing my small goals. It always surprises me, with small steps, how soon I can reach a Big goal.”

Principle #3 Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night:

What then, about fear? I wanted to understand. If we move into driving a car and meet it eye to eye what happens if fear meets us there? “So,” I asked Tom: “are you ever afraid? “After 19 operations within my life, I’ve really understood fear,” he admits that. “It really depends upon our most primal fear; nervous about death. Once you know that death is actually part of the divine plan, it’s liberating, you may let it go and, instead, choose how you can live. So rather than being scared of death, I decided to choose the best way to live.”

So what’s the remove message? Talking to Tom, I’m reminded of the poem by Dylan Thomas who said: “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night.” It seems appropriate here. The bottom line: Staying afraid often keeps us from truly living. Tom reminds me that your positive attitude is vital, “Life is information on attitude.” He also says he could let fear beat him down, yet he doesn’t. “I wouldn’t like to miss joining tomorrow,” he concludes. That said, what fears are receiving in your way? Make today the proper time to face them.

In conclusion: Life Beyond The Boundaries:

When you’ve faced your fears and pushed your boundaries for the edges, what then? I wanted to recognize. Tom smiles. “Find a different mountain to climb,” he admits that matter-of-factly. “It’s why life fun. I know I have considerations. I know that there are going to be days that I’ll just stay in bed and rest while my braces are becoming tuned up. It’s days past when I am with my thoughts that I decide what I wish to set my sights on.”

Author’s Note: In my personal pursuit to live in the evening boundaries I’ve chosen Tom as my role model (lucky person, he’s my pal). We so often browse the media because of these sources and frequently they are illusory. There are “real” people everywhere doing wonderful landmarks…shop around you; angels are everywhere! Learn from them. Choose someone you gaze up to, admire or of whom you appreciate their values. Set goals, climb mountains! Set intention in motion and like the healthy process.
